The Hon Dr Michael Wooldridge

BSC, MBBS, MBA

Chairman

Dr Wooldridge graduated in science, medicine and surgery and holds an MBA from Monash University.

After working as a medical practitioner, he was elected to the Australian Federal Parliament in 1987. He was appointed Deputy Leader of the Opposition in 1993, and became the Minister for Health and Family Services in 1996. His portfolio was extended to include Aged Care in 1998, during which period he also served as the chair for the World Health Organisation’s East Asia and Western Pacific Region. Dr Wooldridge was also Global Chairman of UN AIDS, the peak UN body dealing with HIV.

From 1996 to 2001 he was a member of the Cabinet Budget Committee (Expenditure Review) and thus played an integral part in Federal Budget allocations not only in the health sector but across all sectors of the Australian Government. Since retiring from Federal Parliament he holds an academic appointment at the University of Melbourne and is Chairman of both Neurosciences Australia and the Co-operative Research Centre for Oral Health.

In 2000, he was the recipient for the Novo Nordisk Health Policy Award being determined to have been the individual with the most outstanding contribution to diabetes policy globally over the preceding 3 years. He is currently a director of Resonance Health Limited (Non-Executive Chairman) and CogState Limited (Non-Executive Director); both publicly listed companies.

 
         
   

MR HAROLD NEIL HEWITT

Mr Hewitt has had a career in financial management and accounting and was a partner of KPMG from 1971 to 1998. Over the past fourteen years he has also had a heavy involvement in the health sector – both public and private. He has been on the Board of IDI since 2000 and was elected President and Chairman of the Board in 2002. He is also on the Board of Southern Health and the Chairman of the Jessie McPherson Private Hospital – both in Melbourne.

 
         
   

SIR GEORGE ALBERTI

Amongst his many achievements, Sir George Alberti is one of the world leading experts in diabetes and is the immediate past President of the International Diabetes Federation, Vice President of Diabetes UK, past President of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes and a leading expert in diabetes and emergency medicine. He is also co-Director of a World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre for Research & Development in Laboratory Techniques in Diabetes and sits on the WHO Expert Advisory Panel on Chronic Diseases. Currently he is National Director for Emergency Access for the British National Health Service (NHS), Senior Research Fellow at Imperial College London and Emeritus Professor of Medicine of the University of Newcastle, UK.

 
         
   

Mr Ken Smith

Chief Executive Officer

Ken Smith joined Dia-B in October 2003 initially as Company Secretary, and assisted in achieving the successful launch of the company on the Australian Stock Exchange in 2005. He was appointed as CEO in March 2005.

Mr Smith has extensive experience in the health sector having spent nearly 10 years working firstly in the political and then the consultative area.

From 1996 to 2000 he served as Chief of Staff to the Federal Health Minister, and was actively involved in the reforms to the private health sector. He was responsible for the implementation of the 30% PHI Rebate and the Lifetime Health Cover policies. Ken also assumed a significant role in liaising with all major health industry lobby groups and their key corporate members, including the pharmaceutical group now known as Medicines Australia. After leaving politics, he acted as a PR consultant during the promotion of “No Gap Cover” for the Department of Health and Aged Care, among other business interests.

Prior to entering politics, Ken fulfilled many directorial and managing roles including Director of Finance and Administration for TEAC Australia (1988 to 1996).
